Bill Tilman (1898-1977), a renowned British mountaineer and travel writer, described Langtang Valley as “one of the world’s most beautiful valleys.” The Langtang Trek is one of Nepal’s shortest trekking routes.

It is a famous trekking location located just 61.8 kilometers north of Kathmandu. It features a breathtaking landscape, ranging from the rainforest with banana trees and monkeys at lower levels to glaciers and ice peaks at higher elevations.

It serves as one of the top three preferred trekking destinations in Nepal, alongside the Everest Base Camp Trek and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Langtang Valley Trek provides amazing views of two main Himalayan ranges: Langtang and Ganesh Himal, as well as prosperous flora, wildlife and traditional cultures.

The trek is suitable for both expert trekkers and beginner travellers. You will pass through several ethnic settlements along the way, and you will come across indigenous Tamang and Sherpa populations during the trek.

Day 1 :

Drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi (6-7 hours)

Your first day starts with an early morning breakfast, so you can depart early to avoid rush hour traffic. The Langtang Valley Trek starts with a seven-hour travel from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi. You can take a public bus from Macchapokhari, travel via private vehicle, or hire a jeep to Syabru Besi. Reminder: During the wet season, landslides can occasionally obstruct the route. As soon as you leave the rush and commotion of Kathmandu, you can smell the fresh air and appreciate Nepal's breathtaking beauty. As the bus exits Kathmandu, the route climbs above the crest, presenting breathtaking views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Annapurna. You might encounter endangered animals such as yellow-throated martins, Himalayan black bears, and red pandas. watching and driving through the vibrant town of Trisuli, the route continues to Dhunche, Rasuwa District's administrative headquarters. After driving another 1 hour down the Dhunche, you will finally reach the Shyabru Besi village. You will stay overnight here and prepare for tomorrow's journey to Sherpa Gaon.

Day 2 :

Trek from Syabrubesi to Sherpa Gaon

The primary focus of your journey begins today. You will have breakfast, collect your belongings, and start heading down the ridge on Syabrubesi's main path. The route rises and falls simultaneously through the healthy subtropical forest surrounding Langtang Khola. Langur monkeys are likely to be seen in the branches along the route. You will continue rising steeply along the path until you reach a steel suspension bridge at 2000 meters, then cross to the north bank of the Langtang Khola and arrive at the Sherpa Gaon. It will take you around 5-6 hours to reach Sherpa Gaon.

Day 3 :

Trek from Sherpa Gaon to Langtang Village

Today, following breakfast, you will head out early for a trek down the river in a vibrant landscape. This trek is a bit rocky and offers breathtaking panoramas of Langtang Lirung (7227m). At the small town of Ghora Tabela (3000 m), the path rises from the trees and provides breathtaking views of the mountains that rise on each side of the valley. Main attractions on the trek include wild and rare Red Pandas, monkeys, deer, and plenty of different animals and birds. You will also get to explore the deep green valley, Langtang Khola, massive rock faces, and many more.

Day 4 :

Trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa

The trek continues slowly, over water mills, chortens, prayer flags, and sacred piles of rocks with sculpted inscriptions. You will also go past Nepal's largest mani wall, constructed of stone and with prayers written on it. From Langtang Valley, you will continue the route higher through agricultural land as the region opens up, offering greater vistas of the enormous snow-clad mountains. As you trek for approximately 4-5 hours, you will encounter some minor moraines and streams, after passing through it you will finally reach Kyajin Gompa. Since it is the shortest day of the journey you can further move to lang-shisha kharka for scenic views.

Day 5 :

Visit Tserkuri and Return to Kyanjin Gompa

As usual, after having breakfast early in the morning, you will start your hike. You will trek toward Tserko Ri with stunning views of the mountains, glaciers, and Langtang Valley. Tserko Ri stands as the trek's highest point, at 5,000 meters above sea level. During the trek, you can explore the monastery to observe the Buddhist monks' dazzling morning prayers and pilgrims praying. Because you will be returning to Kyanjin Gompa in the afternoon, you can also visit the village's traditional monasteries. On top of that, you may see the cheese plant and the glacier. From there, you have access to the entire Langtang Range, Kinshung, Yansa Tsenji, and beyond. After spending some time here, you can have lunch and return to Kyanjin Gompa.

Day 6 :

Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel

As you bid farewell to the living Buddhist community of Kyanjin Gompa, you are going to be trekking back to Sherpa Gaon today. Following dinner at Ghoda Table, you will take a moment to visit any interesting sights in Langtang village that you might have missed, such as the earthquake memorial, before proceeding on the way to Sherpa Gaon. It will take you around 6 to 7 hours to reach Sherpa Gaon, time can be up and down depending upon your pace. You will stay overnight here, rest, and prepare for tomorrow's hike.

Day 7 :

Trek from Sherpa Gaon to Syabru Besi

After a rush breakfast early in the morning, you start your journey by retracing your steps. Today's routes mostly go downhill, leading you through mysterious forests and providing magnificent views of green hills and mountains. As most of the trek is downward, it will become a little bit easier for you. This is roughly a 5-hour walk to reach the Shyabru Besi.

Day 8 :

Drive from Shyabru Besi to Kathmandu

On the eighth day, you head back to Kathmandu, bringing your Langtang Valley trip to an end. You will get up early and drive back, passing by terraces, local communities, rivers, high peaks, and more. You will travel along the Trishul rivers, admiring the gorgeous green woodlands. After travelling all day, you arrive in Kathmandu late in the evening. You must be exhausted after the long day so you can relax in your room. If you still have energy, take a walk around the bazaars to explore Kathmandu's nightlife.
